Test
Method
For the quantitative determination of free and total glycerine in B-100
methyl esters by gas chromatography. The range of detection for free
glycerine is 0.005 to 0.05 mass %, and total glycerine from 0.05 to
0.5 mass %. The sample is analyzed by gas chromatography, after silyating
with N-methyl-N-trimethylsilytriflouracetamide (MSTFA).
Free and bonded glycerine content reflects the quality of Biodiesel.
A high content of free glycerine may cause problems during storage,
or in the fuel system, due to separation of the gylcerine. A high total
glycerine content can lead to injector fouling and may also contribute
to the formation of deposits at injection nozzles, pistons, and valves.
Gas
Chromatograph
The Biodiesel Gas Chromatography system is configured to perform and
satisfy all of the requirements of ASTM D6584. Analysis takes about
25 minutes and is simple enough for an untrained operator to perform
in the lab or in the field. The included PeakSimple Data System displays
the calibrated results directly without off-line calculations.
